Course Objectives To provide a stimulating experience for all Food & Nutritional Science Major undergraduates to integrate and apply their knowledge and skills obtained from the Food & Nutritional Science Major through gaining work experience in the field of Food & Nutritional Science that are related to the major of study.
Course Contents & Topics Students taking this course will work as an intern for at least 160 hours in at least 20 working days within the University or outside the University in a company, government department or NGO. The internship may be arranged by the School or obtained by students themselves. In the latter case, the internship must be in a relevant field to the Food & Nutritional Science Major that the students are taking and prior approval by the course coordinator is required
Course Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

CLO 1 gain first hand work experience in a job placement related to their Food & Nutritional Science Major
CLO 2 apply the knowledge in their Food & Nutritional Science Major in solving practical problems in the work place.
CLO 3 acquire an understanding and appreciation of the real work environment and write a report to explain the work experience and self-reflection
CLO 4 extend their network in their field of study and share their experiences through an oral presentation

Pass in at least 24 credits of advanced level disciplinary core/elective biological sciences courses in the Food & Nutritional Science Major.
This capstone course is for Food & Nutritional Science Major students only.
The earliest that a student is allowed to take this capstone course is their year 3 study.

Fail Very limited or no ability to solve problems in the workplace. Fails to handle or carry out the work required in the job or assigned by supervisor(s). Fails to satisfy the requirements set out in the Course Description regarding working hours, written and oral report, or evaluation by supervisor(s), etc

Additional Course Information Students in this course must submit a written report (maximum 1,000 words, no less than 800 words) and deliver an oral presentation about their internship. Internal supervisors will evaluate these submissions, and the student's workplace supervisor will provide an assessment report to the University.

Completing this course fulfils the Capstone requirement and will be noted on the student's transcript. The course is graded "Pass with Distinction/Pass/Fail."

Enrolment is not available through the online system. Instead, students must submit application form (available here: https://www.biosch.hku.hk/course/capstone/capstone.html) to the School of Biological Sciences Office,  Flora Chan (ppchan@hku.hk) for course approval by the coordinator and Faculty of Science registration.
